Lightbulb HVD: The next optical disk.

This is somewhat old news but, I have been tracking its progress for some years now. It’s been a kind of long term investment to see how things progress with this new technology. Of course it has been picking up speed quite well, and they are getting it out to the public in the near future.

A little intro into what HVD’s are right? Well HVD stands for Holographic Versatile Disc, it’s something to the extent what you see on your holographic disk images. It’s about three layers of internal data (or more), to which it can hold up to 3.9 terabytes (with some more R&D that is).

Let me make out this chart for you to understand the significance of this new threshold of HVD.

CD = 700 (MB) Megabytes

DVD = 8 (GB) Gigabytes

HD-DVD = 15 (GB) Gigabytes

Blue-Ray (BD) = 25 (GB) Gigabytes

HVD = 3.8 (TB) Terabyte

The diagram above compares the 2 different mediums of the CD/DVD to the HVD.

A terabyte is about 1,000 capacity of 1 Gigabyte. I will quote from what wiki states since they are best at comparing this:

Quote:
“It has been estimated that the books in the U.S. Library of Congress, one of the largest libraries in the world, would contain a total of about 20 terabytes if scanned in text format. Not including images from the books, the content could be stored with capacity to spare on six 3.9 TB discs.”
More Technical approach to what is HVD:Link to How Stuff Work- HVD

The hard drives that are coming out now can equal up to one Terabyte, but this will certainly put a dent in things to come. Optical storage has been around for a very long time but is ever so progressing. An interesting note on HVD is that it’s much faster and well equipped then there predecessors. So can you imagine the possibilities, of what HVD can do for you?

That was very informative sindex. I wanted to add that a lot of different groups are having their go at developing some form of holographic or volumetric recording and there will be/are quite a few around the several terabyte mark in storage. In two words "format war". With more than two sides like we have with Blueray and HDDVD. I guess. The other thing I notice is that hardrives are failing to keep pace or at least increasing in capacity at a relatively poor rate. I don't think we'll see terabyte optical drives until Bluray and HDDVD have run their consumer cycle, so at least 5 years before the $$$$ early adopter units come out. I just pulled that number out of the air. Also, with web 2.0 we see a trend for more content being delivered and stored over the net and even desktop applications and who knows how far that will go? Will we even bother to store as much media at home in 10 years?

It's amazing how fast technology is progressing.

Time to put stocks in this one :P
